Poker Hand Rankings >

Listed below are poker hank rankings. Hand rankings are standard for most poker games that call for the best five card hand. These rankings do not included rankings if you are playing with wild cards. The list below is from the best poker hand to the worst poker hand. Many of the definitions below have comments that refer to playing hold'em.

Royal Flush:
The hand of all hands. Every poker player remembers their first Royal Flush. The royal flush is an ace high straight with all the cards of the same suit. The hardest hand to get but in straight poker the hand cannot be beaten.

Straight Flush:
The straight flush is not as nice as the Royal Flush but still pretty good. Five cards in sequence with all the same suit. If you hit the straight flush on the flop in Hold'em you should be in good position to make some money. If you do happen to get beat with a straight flush you should still be in good shape because the hand should be eligible for the poker rooms "Bad Beat Jackpot".

Four-of-a-Kind:
Having four cards of the same value is a great hand. You should be able to make some good money off the players sitting on a full house or a flush. This is another hand that if you do happen to get beat should be eligible for most poker rooms "Bad Beat Jackpot". If not you have one hell of a "Bad Beat Story" to tell your poker buddies.

Full House:
Full house is where we start getting into more comm0n hands. Three cards of the same value combined with two other cards of the same value. A full house is a strong hand that players will put lots of money in the pot with. You have to be careful because any of the hands above can make you pay for over playing your full house.

Flush:
Five cards with all the same suit. The cards do not need to be in sequence just the same suit. A good hand but be careful if the board is paired in Hold'em this could allow players to have a full house or 4 of a kind. Also be aware of how high of a flush you have. If there is there cards to the flush on the board. 5-8-Q of spades and your holding 3-10 of spades. Your hand would lose to a player holding 2-J of spades.

Straight:
Any five cards in sequence. Suits do not matter the cards just need to be in sequence. A straight is a good hand just be cautious of a full house or flush. Also be careful that you do not have the low end of the straight, meaning if you have 5-6 with 7-8-9 on the board. A player holding 6-10 or 10-J will have a higher straight and win the hand.

Three-of-a-Kind:
Three cards of the same value. One of the better hands on the low end of the poker hand spectrum. If there are no flush draws or straight draws on the board and you have hit your set you should be in pretty good shape. One of the harder hands to play and even harder to lay down if you think your beat.

Two Pair:
Two sets of two cards with matching values. A strong hand if played correctly and you have a good read on your opponents. The thing to wash for is having two bottom pairs. If you finish the hand with two pair (4-4 and 5-5) and another player also has two pair (2-2 and J-J). The other player would win with a higher two pair. If by chance two players have the same two pair then the player with the highest fifth card wins the pot.

Pair:
Any two cards with the same value. Highest pair wins the pot. If players have the same pair the player with the highest 3rd, 4th or 5th card wins the pot. One pair can easily win pots if played right. A pair may not be the strongest hand but who needs good cards to win!!

High Card:
Sometimes hands will make it to the showdown without players having any of the above hands. If this happens then the player with the highest card wins the pot. If you have a hand with J(jack) high and the next player has a hand with K(king) high the other player wins. If two players have K(king) high then the next highest card comes into play. Many pots have been won with Ace high. I would not suggest trying to win every pot with just Ace high but it can win!!!
